The award winning Derby Theatre is located on the eastern side of Derby city centre. Just off the A601, near the Bass’ Recreation Ground and the River Derwent, the theatre has been a fixture of Derby culture since 1975.
Formerly known as the Derby Playhouse, it was owned and run by Derby Playhouse Ltd from its opening in 1975 until 2008, when the company ceased operating after a period in administration.
The theatre was saved in 2009 as the Derby Theatre under the ownership of the University of Derby, who use it as a professional and learning theatre.
With the support of the University of Derby, the theatre is reimagining what a regional producing theatre can be, placing education and artistic excellence at its heart.
In November 2013 the Theatre was recognised for its partnership with the University of Derby by winning the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts award at the 2013 THE Awards.
In addition to the 530 seat main auditorium, the building contains a 110-seat studio theatre for experimental productions. Whether you are looking for breakfast to start the day, afternoon tea, or a pre-show meal, the Theatre Café serves delicious homemade food and a full range of barista made hot drinks.
The Derby Youth Theatre run regular shows to showcase the upcoming talent, while limited run productions go on throughout the year. The theatre has an eclectic mix of comedies, dramas and romances, so there is something for everyone. It is recommended that all customers visiting the Studio Theatre arrive at level 1 of the main building approximately 10-15 minutes before the performance start time. The Front of House team will then escort you down to the Studio.
