Management Offices Arena Way, Leeds LS2 8BY
First Direct arena is Leeds’ biggest event space. It hosts the biggest touring bands, comedians, and sporting events. It has a capacity of 13,781 and was the first arena in the UK to have a fan-shaped orientation.
Leeds had been the largest city in the United Kingdom without a major venue to hold music or indoor sporting events. As of February 2010, Bristol and Leeds were the only major cities without an arena-style venue.
Major events were held at the Queen’s Hall, but that was demolished in 1989. From then, until the construction of the Arena, Leeds had no large event space. A campaign to create one was an example of real grassroots campaigning. Facebook and Myspace groups championed the demand for an arena.
And Leeds delivered. In 2013, the Arena was opened in style. Sir Elton John played the first ever show there, with Bruce Springsteen and the Kaiser Chiefs all playing sell-out shows. Since then, the Arena has become a must-visit stop for any UK touring show or band.
The Arena’s unique “super theatre” style is designed to enhance the arena experience. All the seats face the stage. This gives the Arena high quality acoustics that provide the best sound experience in the UK.
The interior design is flexible. This means the Arena is able to accommodate a range of events including:
- Music concerts in various configurations
- Comedy events
- Family shows, such as Walking with Dinosaurs
- Ice dance shows and family dance shows
- Boxing/ Wrestling/ UFC
- Shows ranging from 1,500 capacity to the full 13,781 capacity
The Arena is located in Leeds city centre, on Claypit Lane. There are over 7,500 car parking spaces within easy reach of the Arena. Leeds railway station and Leeds City bus station are just 15-minutes walk away.
