About Ongar

As well as the town of Chipping Ongar, one time home of famed missionary Dr David Livingstone, the civil parish of Ongar also includes the villages of Greensted, Greensted Green, Marden Ash and Shelley. Located roughly 20 miles outside London, to the city’s northeast, Ongar is still a relatively rural area belying its roots as a key market town of the Medieval period, complete with remains of a Norman-era mottle and bailey castle.

Until 1994, the Ongar railway station was the most eastern point of the Central line on the London underground network. Originally opening in 1865 as part of the Great Eastern Railway, the station is now only accessible as part of the Epping Ongar heritage railway line, providing short steam journeys since 2012 between Epping and Ongar.

Father Thomas Byles was the Catholic rector for the St Helen’s Parish of Chipping Ongar from 1905 until 1912 when he died aboard the RMS Titanic on its fated maiden voyage. Reputedly refusing a place on a lifeboat twice, Byles gave absolutions, heard confessions and said mass for passengers the morning of the disaster.
