About Newton Mearns

Just east of the M77 and based around the Ayr Road, the suburban town of Newton Mearns is approximately 7 miles southwest of central Glasgow, making it largely a residential area for commuters into the city. As a result, it is now considered part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation.

There is an abundance of religious institutions in Newton Mearns, catering to believers of all faiths. Four Church of Scotland churches, a Baptist church, a Roman Catholic church, two synagogues and a mosque are all found within the town, and it is estimated that around 25% of Scotland’s Jewish community lives in the Newton Mearns area.

Newton Mearns was once home to not one but two castles. Pollock (or Pollok) Castle, the grand tower house, appears on maps of the area stretching back as far as the 16th century. Formerly known as Pool, it was rebuilt by Sir Robert Pollok. Although destroyed by fire in the late Victorian era, the castle was acquired by the military during the Second World War. Largely demolished in the 1970s, the modern-day ‘castle’ is a grand scale house built on the foundations of the former property, with castle walls included as a feature. Mearns Castle by contrast has largely been restored, with the original four-storey rectangular tower now part of the buildings of the Maxwell Mearns Castle Church.

Farming continues to be important in the land around the town, as well as a major bleach factory and textile finishing centre. An array of both primary and secondary schools cater to a large number of children in the area, and retail facilities for residents are provided by an indoor shopping centre known as the Avenue, which houses around 40 units.
