About Holywell

A part of the wider Meads district, Holywell marks the most south west point of Eastbourne, yet does not have specific boundaries when it comes to the town. A map of the town from 1816 shows an area called Holly Well that was a small fishing hamlet at the base of the low cliff edge and by the chalk cliffs.

The natural phenomena of the local chalk cliffs have a pinnacle point that used to be referred to locally as Gibraltar, that was once home to a hive of small localised industry around fishermen’s lime kilns and a chalk pit. The rock formations were later styled into an ornate rock garden as Eastbourne grew to be popular among seaside-loving holidaymakers.

There are many origin stories locally that surround the name Holywell, with an association to a small chapel dedicated to St Gregory, but also mainly due to the chalybeate spring coming from the cliffs, that were once said to have offered curative properties.

The small area of Holywell was also once home to a cross-Channel telegraph cable that provided almost instantaneous communication with the European mainland. Laid in the mid-1800s to the French fishing port of Dieppe, the cable was damaged during the Second World War, and traces of it were still being found as late as the millennium.

Whether you live in Holywell itself or in surrounding areas of Eastbourne and nearby villages, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
