About Kirkby Lonsdale

Kirkby Lonsdale is a small market town situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Due to its scenic location, the town offers a tranquil base from which to explore the English Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland. As with Lancaster, Kirkby Lonsdale is located on the banks of the River Lune, and there are traces of settlements in the area dating back as far as the Neolithic era. It is also roughly 13 miles from Kendal.

Little cobbled streets and a Georgian market cross still fill the town, and original stone cottages can be found in places such as Salt Pie Lane and Jingling Lane. The town’s market can be traced back as far as 1227.

Just outside of Kirkby Lonsdale is Devil’s Bridge, one of several found throughout the UK that are attributed the story about the devil promising to build a bridge with a soul as repayment, being tricked with a dog. It is not to be confused with the three-tiered Devil’s Bridge in Ceredigion, Wales, which has a similar myth attributed to it. The water under the bridge is particularly clear and deep, making it popular with scuba divers.

An 1822 painting of Ruskin’s View by renowned British artist JMW Turner was sold for £217,250 in 2012. The pastoral landscape was inspired by the view from the churchyard of St Mary’s Church in Kirkby Lonsdale, overlooking the River Lune, with much of the scenery remaining unchanged over the years.

With a range of different home styles, ranging from older properties in the town centre to newer homes on newer estates, the versatility of our shutters means that then can suit your space, whether you prefer a contemporary or classic look.
