About Preston

Obtaining city status as recently as 2002, Preston is the administrative centre of Lancashire and a major part of the British defence industry due to BAE Systems having a production centre for military aircraft nearby. Dating back as far as the Roman era, Preston (formerly recorded as Prestune) was on the road running from modern-day Carlisle to Manchester. The name is thought to be a derivation of “Priest’s Town”.

A notable part of the Preston skyline is St Walburge’s Church, designed by Joseph Hansom, that has the tallest spire in England that isn’t part of a cathedral. Other attractions and places of interest include the Ribble Steam Railway, Harris Museum and Avenham Park, home to the Belvedere, a Victorian pavilion that also doubles as an outdoor wedding venue.

As well as a lively events programme, Preston has something of a reputation for being Lancashire’s top shopping destination. Examples of stunning architecture are on show in Fishergate, the tree-lined high street. Well-known shops are located in the city’s two shopping centres, mixed in with quirky independents and the new Preston Markets, offering local produce, places to eat and so much more.

With a long and varied history tied to the Industrial Revolution, Preston is thought to be where teetotalism was first thought up, at a Temperance Movement meeting in the 19th century. Notable people to come from the city include cricketer Freddie Flintoff, Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and the animator Nick Park, otherwise known as the creator of Wallace and Gromit.
