About Ollerton
The Nottinghamshire town of Ollerton is located just on the edge of Sherwood Forest and is based on the banks of the River Maun, having grown up around a crossing point over the river, there is still a historic bridge in use on the Ollerton Road as a result.
When mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, there were just households listed in Ollerton, and it was during the 1960s and 1970s when the town really grew, as a result of the boom in mining, led by the Ollerton Colliery. It was considered to be one of the most left-wing of mines and played a large role in the miners’ strikes of the 1980s.
Nearby attractions include the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, just the other side of the A614 Blyth Road in neighbouring Edwinstowe, and the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, an important memorial to victims of genocide in the 20th century that is based on Acre Edge Road, just west of Ollerton near to the neighbouring village of Laxton.
The original 18th-century watermill in Ollerton commercially produced flour until it fell into disrepair and ceased operations in the 1980s. The building was restored in 1993 and is now home to a popular tea shop and exhibition, and is the only working watermill in the county of Nottinghamshire.
