About Gateshead

Situated on the southern banks of the River Tyne, Gateshead was a part of County Durham until the creation of Tyne and Wear in 1974. Although a separate settlement, Gateshead is often linked with nearby Newcastle, due to a total of seven bridges which join the two.

The area has enjoyed a longstanding heritage in the North East of England, the town has more recently become known as a cultural hub. Architectural highlights include the iconic Angel of the North structure, the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Gateshead was first recorded by the early church historian Bede in AD 623. The area then became known for its coal mining, later for iron ore production, leading to a rapid expansion of the population throughout the 19th Century. Nowadays, Gateshead is a centre of retail, with the Intu Metrocentre being the largest shopping and leisure centre in the Uk, with over 340 shops taking up 2,000,000 square feet of space.
