About Ponteland

Based near the city of Newcastle, Ponteland is a large village in the county of Northumberland named after the River Pont which runs through the area. Originally the home of a substantial amount of marshland, Ponteland was enlarged between 2001 and 2013 when the adjoining Darras Hall estate was redeveloped.

Ponteland was also once home to a 13th-century castle, largely destroyed in a Scottish raid just before the Battle of Otterburn. The Blackbird Inn, one of several local hostelries, is situated on the site of the castle, reportedly containing some of the old tunnels running to the nearby St Mary’s Church.

The nearby village of High Callerton is also home to buildings of historical interest, such as the Rebellion House, a 16th Century dwelling once thought to have been a refuge for Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War. Properties in Ponteland vary greatly, from traditional stone-built cottages, bungalows and semi-detached houses, up to more exclusive homes on the Darras Hall estate.
