About Tyne and Wear

Brought into existence in 1974, the county of Tyne and Wear is named after the two rivers which both meet the sea on the area’s coastline, consisting of five metropolitan boroughs. The City of Newcastle upon Tyne (usually simply referred to as Newcastle) is the predominant settlement in the county, with its borders meeting Northumberland to the north and County Durham to the south.

Although one of the more recent counties in existence, the area itself has been populated for many generations, due to the richness of wildlife and resources found and both the Tyne and the Wear rivers. Accordingly, there are quite a few places of interest with a historical focus, such as the Roman forts at Segedunum and Arbeia, several museums, and the remains of the castle in the centre of Newcastle.

With the economy of the area now largely dominated by the service, retail and office sectors, many residents now commute for their employment. Gateshead, based on the southern banks of the Tyne, boasts some unique local landmarks such as the Sage and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
