About Whitley Bay

The historic seaside town of Whitley Bay has been a settled since at least the Norman invasion, conveniently located at the mouth of the River Tyne, making it the perfect place for a port.

Once known for industries such as coal mining and limestone quarrying, the town became known more like a seaside holiday resort throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Convenient transport links provided by the Tyne and Wear Metro service mean that Whitley Bay is also known for being a commuter base for those working in nearby Newcastle.

Due to its role as a seaside resort, Whitley Bay is home to a number of leisure facilities such as amusements, skatepark and swimming pool, with the town’s local venue the Playhouse opening in 2009 following a major refurbishment. Spanish City was a popular funfair throughout the 20th Century, featuring in the Dire Straits song ‘Tunnel of Love’, and is undergoing a sizable regeneration project due to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
