North Orbital Road, St Albans AL2 1DH, England

Located on the North Orbital Road, just to the south of St Albans, the Aylett Nurseries are an independent garden centre started by the late Roger Aylett in 1955 which won 36 consecutive Gold Medals at Royal Horticultural Society shows between 1961 and 1999.

Aylett prides itself on being one of the country’s leading garden centres when it comes to flowers such as Dahlias, Geraniums and Fuchsias. The large plant area contains a widespread number of shrubs, trees, herbaceous plants, climbing plants, roses and so much more, with something to suit every garden.

Described by friends and family as a “pioneer”, Roger Aylett developed a small family business into a thriving independent garden centre. More than this achievement, he also published an autobiography in 2005 called “50 Golden Gardening Years”. In 2010 was named Gardening Which’s “Best Buy” and rated the third best independent garden centre in the UK.

Visitors don’t need to plan based on the weather, as Aylett has covered walkways between buildings and an indoor plant house for when it is cold and raining. The Nurseries sell vast numbers of houseplants of various species, and people can also enjoy a relaxing coffee break at the Dahlia Coffee House.

The Nurseries are so popular in the local area that weekends are usually packed with customers. Its location means that people will need a car to visit Aylett, but also to take away any plants and gifts that are available to purchase. Although there is a decent amount of space for visitors in the car park, it does often fill up at the weekends. It is regularly reviewed well for its café’s food selection and customer service. The shop also has a wide array of gift ideas for people of all ages.

Aylett Nurseries is thought to be one of the leading gardening centres in the South East of England but prides itself on being so much more than just a garden centre. The staff are passionate about plants and serious about service. Regardless of whether people are just getting into gardening or experienced green-fingered enthusiasts, the plant guarantee ensures every visitor will be able to find something to suit their tastes.
