About the Chalfonts
Comprising a group of three villages – Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles and Little Chalfont – the Chalfonts have been listed as a settlement since at least the 10th century AD, when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, when the area was clumped together as Ceadeles Funtan (roughly translated as chalk springs).
The hamlet of Chalfont Common is roughly halfway between Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter, and is home to the Epilepsy Society, the largest medical charity in the UK in the field of epilepsy. Originally founded in 1892 as the National Society for the Employment of Epileptics, the society has been helping diagnose, treat, care, train and campaign ever since. There is currently residential care services for over 100 adults at the Chalfont Centre.
The village of Chalfont St Giles provided a refuge for poet John Milton during the Great Plague of London in 1665. He completed the epic work Paradise Lost while living in the village, and plotted its sequel, Paradise Regained before moving back to the capital. His cottage is open to the public as a museum, and has been running as such since 1887.
Chalfont Manor is a lavish property that has been home to notable residents over the years such as Ozzy Osbourne, Noel Gallagher, and Scottish comedy writer Armando Iannucci. Other people closely associated with the Chalfonts are former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and DJ Chicane, both of whom were born in Chalfont St Giles.
