Located just south of Bedford and easily accessible from the A421 main road, the village of Shortstown is a relatively recent development, being built from 1916 onwards as housing for workers at the Short Brothers airship works. The Short Brothers company were experiencing various difficulties so withdrew from the area just a few years later, but the association kept on with the original name.
RAF Cardington was based just outside of Shortstown and is the same airfield that the Short Brothers left. The vast airship sheds stand prominently in the local skyline, and are now used as film sets as Cardington Studios, featuring in movies such as the Dark Knight trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker and Inception.
Several famous faces lived at RAF Cardington at one point or another during military service, including speed enthusiast Donald Campbell, entertainer Max Bygraves, author Neville Shute and Rolling Stone bassist Bill Wyman.
Halfway between Shortstown and neighbouring Elstow is the Birthplace of author John Bunyan. A monument stone and information panel have been erected to signify the supposed site of a long demolished house where the land-owning Bunyan family lived, decrying John’s supposedly humble origins.
