About Soham
Although it is a relatively quiet settlement, Soham has an extensive and exciting local history, stretching back to artefacts dating from the Stone Age found in the area.
The parish church of St Andrew, just off of the town’s High Street, is thought to have been built on the site of the former Soham Abbey, a 7th-century monastery founded by St Felix of Burgundy that Danish invaders destroyed in the 9th century. It was the first Christian site to be established in Cambridgeshire.
Olaudah Equiano, the former slave and abolitionist best known as the first black British author, lived in the town for a while and married at St Andrew’s Church to Susannah Cullen, a Soham local girl. The town was also the home of William Case Morris, more famous in Argentina for his work founding several children’s homes.
As well as a railway station that provides services to Ipswich and Peterborough, other facilities in Soham include four schools, several pubs, many takeaways and restaurants, and food shops such as Asda and the Co-Op.
