About Little Baddow
Situated to the northeast of its Great counterpart, Little Baddow is much closer to the banks of the River Chelmer, with the base for Essex Waterways based at the Papermill Lock of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, just north of the village.
Thomas Hooker, the prominent English colonist and founder of Connecticut, lived for a time in Little Baddow, running a small school after his role as a church lecturer was shut down by Archbishop William Laud in 1629. Moving from Little Baddow to the Netherlands, he migrated to Massachusetts Bay, joining the nascent colony there before splitting off to form Connecticut in the late 1630s.
Another famous resident of Little Baddow was Eric Eastwood, a squadron leader in the RAF during the Second World War, he played a significant role in developing radar technology and eventually joined the Marconi Research Laboratory, becoming Director of Research for Marconi in 1954.
