About Witham
Part of the district of Braintree in Essex, Witham is twinned with the town of Waldbröl in Germany. The River Brain runs through the centre of the town, joining with the River Blackwater on the south side of the A12, which borders Witham’s outlying areas.
In the 1970s, archaeological surveys of the Witham Lodge area revealed the ruins of a Roman temple as well as a pottery kiln, providing links to the town’s past which has been dated back as far as Neolithic times. In the 18th Century, Witham fleetingly enjoyed a period of great popularity in the region due to the discovery of a mineral spring by Dr Taverner in 1737.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, the town underwent a period of rapid expansion after the Greater London Council instigated the building of three large council estates on the west and north sides of Witham. Two shopping precincts make up the town’s centre, with the Newlands Shopping Centre and Grove Centre hosting many of the town’s retail outlets, alongside a number of small local businesses, restaurants, pubs, cafes and several high street banks.
