About Writtle
Situated around 1 mile west of Chelmsford, the village of Writtle has a quaint traditional English countryside feel, complete with village green, duck pond and Norman church.
Just south of Writtle in Hylands Park, the extensive grounds owned by the Hylands Estate, now run by Chelmsford Borough Council, the house was once a grand home to brewery owners, lawyers, bankers and other entrepreneurs. Due to its construction, Hylands House has doubled for the White House in the 2004 film Chasing Liberty and season 3 of the Netflix series The Crown.
In the early 1920s, Writtle was the site of 2MT, the first British radio station to make regular entertainment broadcasts. It was run by Peter Eckersley, a Marconi engineer and later Chief Engineer for the British Broadcasting Corporation in its early years.
The village and its surrounding land were once owned by Robert the Bruce, King of Scots during the early 14th century. He married his second wife Elizabeth de Burgh in the village church just 4 years before he was crowned king at Scone Palace near Perth in 1306.
