About Curzon Park

Originally laid out in the 19th century following Chester’s growing prosperity, Curzon Park’s location next to the River Dee continues to make it one of the wealthiest parts of the city. With mansions overlooking the Roodee (otherwise known as Chester Racecourse), Curzon Park was named after Richard Curzon-Howe, the peer and politician who exercised considerable influence over King George IV and Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV.

Curzon Park is currently home to a small community of Benedictine nuns, with a retreat house and chapel sitting alongside a late 19th-century mansion house constructed from red brick. Currently, there are only around 200 Benedictine monks and nuns left in the world as part of the English Benedictine Congregation, with just 7 based at Curzon Park.

Founded in 1901, Curzon Park is also home to the Chester Golf Club, an 18-hole parkland course that is one of the oldest established clubs in Cheshire. It is based on an area of land formerly known as ‘Bureres Halgh’ and was used as a gun placement during the English Civil War.
