About Higham
Found just a stone’s throw away from the M1 Motorway, the village of Higham comes under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, just a couple of miles from the neighbouring town’s centre.
Higham and the wider Barnsley area are closely associated with the Yorkshire game of Nipsy. Before his death, Higham resident Ron Darlow was the world champion of the bat and ball game, sometimes referred to as Knurr and Spell, where a small object around the size of a walnut must be hit as far as possible.
Like many places in the area, the village had a close association with mining, with a small drift mine in Higham operating for several years. The facility was used for coal from Redbrook colliery and then transferred to Dodworth colliery for processing. A much older shaft could still be seen in the 1970s but has since fallen further into disrepair and been reclaimed by nature.
Higham Cricket Club is based just off Pog Well Lane and competes in the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League. There was also once a small football team, and many of the local sporting events were linked to the Miners Inn, a longstanding pub in Higham that has been demolished for several years.
