About Thorpe Hesley
The village of Thorpe Hesley is in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, though is situated much closer to the neighbouring village of Chapeltown. However, the two are separated by the M1 Motorway, yet connected as both sides of Junction 35.
Having a longstanding history with the coal mining industry, Thorpe Hesley is recorded as being mined for at least 800 years, with Cistercian monks beginning the practice for their forges. Due to its ties to coal mining, the village was featured in the 1975 Disney film, Escape from the Dark (about “pit ponies”), as well as the Ken Loach drama, The Price of Coal.
Despite only being a village of around 4,500 people, there are four pubs still open and offering a welcome place to relax and enjoy a drink. The Red Lion, The Masons Arms and The Horse and Tiger are all within easy walking distance of each other, with The Ball pub being slightly further away at the other end of Hesley Lane.
Church reformer and Methodist preacher John Wesley is recorded as spending some time in the village preaching in the area. Although the place he stayed, Barley Hall, is now demolished, there are still signs of the former estate, with a plantation and stables still based on the land.
