About Bearwood
Confusingly, although concurrent with West Howe and Bear Cross, both of which are suburbs of Bournemouth, the suburb of Bearwood comes under the authority of Poole, technically making it part of the neighbouring town. However, most locals consider it a part of Bournemouth.
Located right at the northernmost stretches of the seaside resort, Bearwood is centred around a Co-Op supermarket and medical centre just off King John Avenue. Most of the area was developed in the 1980s on what had once been open heathland.
When Bearwood was being developed, whoever was in charge of town planning at the time must have had a bad sense of humour. Due to Magna Road in the area, which runs to the nearby village of Canford Magna, many of the road names in Bearwood relate to the signing of the Magna Carta royal charter and symbol of British liberty. Runnymede Avenue, King John Avenue, Barons Road, Knights Road, Plantagenet Crescent and Dukes Drive all relate to that historical event and those involved.
One of the facilities available to the local community is Bearwood Primary and Nursery School, providing education for children up to school year 6.
