About Bearsden
Effectively a suburb of Glasgow, Bearsden is in essence still very much its own separate entity, with its own high street, train stations, golf courses, and a range of other local facilities.
Bearsden has been settled since at least the Roman occupation, when a fort in the 2nd century AD was based on the Antonine Wall. Remains of a military bath house from this time can still be seen near Bearsden town centre.
One of the important archaeological discoveries to come out of Bearsden is the Bearsden Shark, a 330-million-year-old fossil found in the Manse Burn stream in 1981. An example of the species Akmonistion zangerli, the Bearsden shark is the only complete fossil of its kind in the world.
