About Laurieston
Located next the southern banks of the River Clyde, the central Glasgow district of Laurieston is a core part of the Glaswegian area known as Gorbals. It is named in honour of James Laurie, a local merchant who helped develop properties for the community in the mid-19th century.
Compared to other neighbourhoods in the vicinity, the 19th century buildings in Laurieston, and some from even earlier, managed to escape the slum clearances in the city taking place during the 1960s and 70s. This was likely due to the higher quality of building that had taken place when the properties were first erected.
Housed in the building of the former New Bedford Cinema, the O2 Academy Glasgow is one of the premier music venues in Scotland, playing host to The Killers and James Brown, who played his last UK gig there in 2006, just two months before he died.
Local facilities include the Glasgow Central Mosque, Sherriff Court, Co-Op Food stores and the Super Soccer small football pitches for indoor/outdoor 5-a-side matches. The main railway lines going over the Caledonian Railway Bridge into Glasgow Central all head through the centre of Laurieston.
