About Merchant City
Located just a short walk from the northern banks of the River Clyde, Merchant City is one of the oldest parts of the city of Glasgow, with the medieval junction of Glasgow Cross, with its Mercat Cross and Tolbooth Steeple still a part of the local skyline.
The majority of the buildings in the area were largely developed from the 1750s onwards, as residences and warehouses of wealthy local merchants all settled in the city, due to its strong connections with global shipping at the time. It was these tobacco, tea, sugar and slave traders that give Merchant City its name.
The somewhat open nature of Merchant City is related to plans in the 1960s to restructure the road network of the thriving city. Several buildings were cleared to allow for new roads, but these were never built, leading to a decision to revitalise the area, between the Scottish Development Agency and the city council. The decision was made to mirror Covent Garden, blending the historic buildings with contemporary shopping and dining experiences.
Merchant City Festival is an annual arts, street dance, music, market, fashion and comedy event that is regularly well attended in the heart of Glasgow. One of the biggest draws to the festival is the carnival, which processes from the nearby Glasgow Cathedral, dedicated to St Mungo, which is the oldest cathedral in mainland Scotland, and the oldest building in Glasgow, some of which dates from the 12th century.
