About Bilton

First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name Bilton is derived from the Old English meaning “Billa’s farmstead”. Formerly a village in its own right, Bilton has formed a suburb of Harrogate since the Victorian era, when the nearby spa town grew significantly and incorporated a number of nearby smaller settlements.

The Leeds and Thirsk Railway was a former train line that ran through Bilton village, although no station was ever built. A stone viaduct over the River Nidd was built for the line, and in 1908 a narrow gauge railway was constructed to carry coal from the main line to nearby gas works. Although the railway changed operators several times, the line finally closed in the 1950s. The tracks were removed, and now there are only traces left in Bilton.

Bilton Hall was the large country house just northeast of the village, with grounds leading to the River Nidd, and roughly halfway between Bilton and nearby Knaresborough. First built as a hunting lodge for the Slingsby family, Bilton Hall was purchased and redeveloped by the Stockdale family. The Stockdales once boasted three MPs for Knaresborough as part of their family tree. Bilton Hall is now a privately owned nursing home.
