About Newtown
The population of Newtown is a socially and ethnically diverse mix of families, professionals and students from the town’s university, whose main campus is just south of the Newtown/East Reading area. Reading College can also be found in Newtown, as well as the Old Cemetery, Watlington House community venue and historic building, along with the Palmer Park Sports Stadium, providing a range of community activities in the local area.
Palmers Park gets its name from George Palmer, the proprietor of the Huntley & Palmers biscuit manufacturers, who dabbled in local politics, being mayor of Reading between 1857 and 1858. He served as an MP for Reading in the 1880s, with his son (also called George) representing Reading in parliament at the turn of the 20th century. He donated 49 acres of land to the town which was opened to the public in 1891.
Based around the central area of London Road, Newtown was developed during the Victorian era, with the Huntley bakery (and later biscuit factory) which dramatically increased the number of people in the region, with the large number of terraced houses being built to cater for the population increase.
