About North Hykeham
Out to the south west of Lincoln, and substantially more developed than its almost namesake South Hykeham, the town of North Hykeham is home to around 14,000 people, making it independent from its neighbouring city, though the two basically join along Newark Road.
With its own Town Council, again showing its distinction from nearby Lincoln, North Hykeham’s town crest reflects its milling past, with two windmills and a water wheel alongside a mighty oak, three lions and three fleurs de lis. The town’s motto of ‘Audiatur et altera pars’, roughly translates to “listen to the other side”, a term often used in legal matters relating to the basic human right to a fair hearing.
Although a church in North Hykeham was mentioned as early as 1160 in official documentation, by 1700 the original structure was no more than a ruin and so taken down. The current Anglican place of worship dates from the mid-Victorian era, situated on the corner of Mill Lane and Moor Lane, and is dedicated to All Saints.
