About Sturton by Stow
Found just west of the River Till, right on the route of the Roman Road known as Till Bridge Lane, the village of Sturton by Stow is roughly halfway between Marton and Scampton. Sturton by Stow is the largest settlement in the ecclesiastical parish of Stow, an area that includes Stow itself, Normanby by Stow, Willingham by Stow and Stow Pasture. The parish church of St Mary is interesting as one of the major remaining Anglo-Saxon era churches, making it one of the oldest of its kind in England.
Now a popular holiday location, the Old Brick Pits, just south of the village centre off of Mill Lane, are actually based on the site of a former clay pit used in the production of brick and tile. Mill Lane itself is still home to the Subscription Mill, a converted windmill that is now a private residence.
