About Welton
Located to the north of Lincoln, with the sparkling Welton Beck running through, the Lincolnshire village of Welton is seen as a picturesque and stereotypically British countryside retreat. Since 1969, the whole village has been designated a conservation area, mainly due to the abundance of Grade II listed period properties.
A historical well harnessed a naturally occurring spring in the village, later replaced in the Victorian era. The water leading into the nearby stream made it the perfect place for a settlement, with archaeological evidence being found that showed the Celtic occupation of the area.
In November 1987, Welton was the centre of the national news after two Red Arrows aircraft collided above the village and crashed during aerial practice manoeuvres out of nearby RAF Scampton. Thankfully no one was injured in the accident, though there were still calls on the RAF to re-home the famed display team.
Despite its small size, there are a good number of facilities in the village – such as a Co-Op, village hall, golf centre, St Mary’s Church, riding stables and The Black Bull inn, an old coach house that was known as the favoured pub of the famous Dam Busters team that led Second World War bombing raids.
