About Ravenshead
Newstead Abbey, just to the east of Ravenshead, was once an opulent Augustinian priory. It was converted into a domestic home after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Now a palatial manor, it is a popular tourist attraction in the area and is perhaps best known as the ancestral home of famous poet Lord Byron, who inherited the property aged just 10 years old, although his mother decided to lease the property during his adolescence due its poor state of repair.
The legend of Robin Hood is based around Sherwood Forest near to the area where Ravenshead is located, meaning that the village is filled with naming references in buildings and streets. Although he appears as a later addition to the tales, it is possible that Friar Tuck was inspired by the then priory at Newstead. The antagonistic character of Will Scarlet is also reputedly buried at nearby Blidworth Church, just east of the village.
Being a village in a rural part of the country, farming was once the main occupation in the area until the village was built up, with the addition of schools and shops. The only other industry in Ravenshead was sand quarrying. The first quarry was opened in 1919 to provide building sand for nearby Nottingham and Hucknall.
