About Wheatley
The Oxfordshire village of Wheatley is about 6 miles from Oxford, out to the east of the city on the A40 just before it connects up with the M40. Wheatley is also some 50 miles from Central London.
St Mary the Virgin Church, known more affectionately by locals as simply St Mary’s, is found on Church Street. It was designed by G E Street and consecrated in 1857. The local United Reformed Church was built in 1842 on the site of an old tanning barn, having originally met in a room above the Sun pub in the village. The Sun building is still there, now operating as a chic café and bar.
Oxford Brookes University has a campus in Wheatley, just the other side of the A40, technically making it part of the nearby village of Holton. Holton Brook leads into the River Thame just west of the village, running past the local Asda and near to the Oxford motorway services on the nearby M40.
On Church Road, there is a stone pyramid that used to be the local lock-up. Little more than a single door with a heavy padlock, the windowless and seemingly airless jail showed a general decline in the behaviour of the village residents.
