About Rode
Located on the banks of the River Frome, and bordered by the A36 and A361 roads, Rode is a village with an industrious past, acting as a hub of wool milling thanks to the abundance of water provided by the river. Roughly equidistant from the towns of Westbury, Frome and Trowbridge meant that Rode had a much broader impact, even exporting its wool internationally and crafting a dress for Queen Charlotte in the 18th century.
Rode was the scene of one of the most infamous murders of the Victorian era when Constance Kent was arrested and tried for the murder of her 3-year-old half-brother at Road Hill House. Although she received the death sentence, this was reduced to life imprisonment, and was released after twenty years.
The old village was positioned around St Lawrence’s Church but much of that layout now lies in ruins and is only visible from the air. Rode is in the Parish of Hardington Vale which also includes Tellisford, Farleigh Hungerford, Hemington, Laverton and Norton St. Phillip.
