About Essington
Located to the northeast of Wolverhampton by the join of the M54 and M6 motorways, the former mining village of Essington is a relatively small settlement, but one that is well connected in terms of the local road network and school facilities.
Comedian and actress Meera Syal grew up in Essington, having been born in neighbouring Wolverhampton. Best known for her roles in Goodness Gracious Me, Yesterday and Broadchurch, Syal based the location of ‘Anita and Me’, her first novel, on the village where she grew up.
The parish church of St John’s is an active Anglican congregation that meets in a relatively new building, dating from the 1930s, just off of the B4156 that runs through the village. Also nearby is the Essington Wood Methodist Church, a smaller congregation that provides a slightly different style of worship.
Just off Brownshore, Lane is the Brownshore Lakes (known locally as the Essington Pools), now left to be wildlife sites; these pools were once used for the tailing and settling part of the coal mining process. Essington Cemetery is also nearby, one of the many facilities in the wider Wolverhampton area that provides a tranquil place of rest.
