About Shirley
Recorded as a manor with a mill in the Domesday Book of 1086, Shirley was once a small village, and in 1228, ownership of the Common land transferred from Nicholas de Sirlie, then lord of Shirley, to the Burgesses of Southampton. Now known as Southampton Common, the area is the main green area of the city, with a pub known as the Cowherds serving as a reminder to its rural beginnings.
King Edward VI School also ties modern day Shirley to its historic counterpart, as the school was originally founded in 1553. Transferring buildings several times over the years, there have been a number of notable people educated at King Edward VI, such as the hymn writer Isaac Watts, conservative MP Stephen Hammond, and Justin Young, lead singer of The Vaccines.
