Sir John Mills Theatre is located just off Yarmouth Road, on the western side of Ipswich. The theatre is named after Academy Award Winning actor, John Mills. The theatre is home to the Eastern Angles theatre company.
The theatre was originally a Victorian primary school, but it has since been converted into a working theatre and central office for the Eastern Angles. As well as professional performances, music and comedy nights, the theatre often hosts local amateur societies.
As a working theatre, Sir John Mills Theatre has a small, but well-stocked bar to fortify yourself for the hours of amateur dramatics fun that awaits your visit. The theatre is run with the support of volunteers, called Angels. They serve as front of house staff, work the bar and help promote the shows.
The Eastern Angles are a professional rural touring and site-specific theatre with a focus on new writing, new audiences and the development of new talent.
Eastern Angles provides opportunities for people to get involved with working with the company. The company supports aspiring playwrights, directors and actors develop their skills and experience. They also actively support local schools and colleges.
Stories and themes are derived from the local area. Since forming in 1982, Eastern Angles have blazed a trail across East Anglia and expanded to national tours and Edinburgh Festival residencies.
The theatre has free parking that it shares with Suffolk Records Office. There is an overflow car park, but even so, it is recommended that you arrive early to secure a space. To locate the car park, go down Gatacre Road and on the right-hand side are large blue gates.
