Located just to the east of Ipswich, the town of Kesgrave still retains its individuality thanks to a range of shops, schools, high street and other facilities. It is well connected to the rest of Suffolk due to its proximity to the main A12 road.
Recorded as Gressgrava in the Domesday Book of 1086, it is thought that Geoffrey Chaucer, the famed poet known for his Canterbury Tales was born in Suffolk, and links have indicated he may have been born in the pub of the nascent Kesgrave. His grandfather was a wine merchant who lived in nearby Ipswich, and it is thought he owned the 14th century coaching inn known as the Farmhouse.
Later being renamed Kesgrave, it was still a largely agricultural settlement until the second half of the 20th century, when it was developed as overspill for the nearby town of Ipswich. Having just 20 dwellings in the 1921 census, by the late 1980s, Kesgrave had grown to cover an area of more than 800 acres.
The relatively small Suffolk Aviation Heritage Museum opened in 2007 on the outskirts of Kesgrave. Operated as part of the Association for Suffolk Museum, the free Suffolk Aviation Heritage Display Centre includes informative displays and exhibitions, alongside a number of aircraft.
