About Stowmarket
The small town of Stowmarket is situated right at the heart of Suffolk, lying on the main railway line from London to Norwich, as well as the River Gipping. In Old English, the word “stow” meant ‘principal place’ and in 1347 was first granted a market charter by the then King Edward III, completing the town’s name. The market continues to this day.
For a number of years, Stowmarket was of the main producers of malt in the UK, and a canal allowed the maltsters of the town to sell their products in Ipswich and on to London by sea. Due to the railway, the canal declined in popularity and was closed in 1934.
The town continues to grow in popularity, due to continued development at the north of Stowmarket. There are a number of period buildings and local landmarks such as Haughley Park and Museum of East Anglian Life. The town is also home to the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, named after the popular BBC DJ who lived in the area.
