About Biddenham

Located just east of the River Great Ouse, and easily accessible by the A6, Biddenham is a village on the outskirts of Bedford that has existed as a settlement since at least the 11th or 12th century, when the parish church of St James was built. It has one of the last remaining village ponds in Bedfordshire, originally put in around 1700, it has become a community project, with local villagers maintaining it since the 1980s.

Biddenham Pit is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and was designated in 1988 due to examples of interglacial molluscs and ancient remains of early mammals. Fossils have also been found dating from the Paleolithic era in the former gravel pit, which was originally set down by the river when it flowed more east than its current course.

Secondary education in the area is provided by Biddenham International School and Sports College, a mixed provider that covers a broad range of topics. It was established in 1979 as the John Howard Upper School, named after the 18th century philanthropist and prison reformer who was at one point the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire.
