About Cranfield
Cranfield’s airfield was originally an RAF training airfield and was used after the war by the College of Aeronautics, which has now become Cranfield University. The Airport is now smaller than when it was run by the RAF, having reduced in size as the requirements of the University changed over the years.
Just to the South West of Cranfield Airport is a Technology Park, with an Innovation Centre, the Aerospace Technology Institute as well as a Nissan Technical Centres, one of just four such locations located in Europe.
Despite being demolished in 1934, there was a sizeable country home know as Cranfield Court, which was built in the Victorian era in a French Gothic style for Reverend Harter, then Rector of Cranfield. The former entrance to the grounds still stands on Lodge Road, with the remaining parts of the house being transformed into private lodgings.
There is a non-league football team called Cranfield United FC, which currently competes in the Bedfordshire County League, and was originally formed in 1903. Their local pitch is based on Crawley Road at the north of the village.
