About Flitwick
Located roughly halfway between the larger towns of Bedford and Luton, Flitwick is based on the banks of the River Flit, and is famous for its manor house, constructed in the 17th century and thought to be haunted. It was featured in the paranormal TV show “Strange but True”, and is now used as a hotel and restaurant.
Flitwick has three lower schools (Kingsmoor, Templefield and Flitwick Lower School) and a middle school (Woodland Middle School Academy). In the area is also Redborne Upper School & Community College, which is approximately 1 mile away from Flitwick Railway Station.
There is evidence in the town of a Norman-era motte and bailey castle, which would have originally been surrounded by a moat. In the Domesday Book, Flitwick Castle is mentioned as being under the control of William Lovet, the Norman landowner who displaced Alvin, the Saxon owner prior to the 1066 invasion. The earthworks are all that remain, and are found in the park locally known as either Temple Field or Mount Hill.
