About Kempston
Historically Kempston was a village with no centre, being instead based around several smaller hamlets or ‘ends’ – Bell End, Wood End, South End and Box End. Close to the banks of the River Great Ouse is Church End, home to a handful of houses and All Saints Church, which has stood on the site since 1099, and now offers guided tours with afternoon tea to locals and visitors alike.
During the 1870s developers began to turn Kempston into more of a town with its own distinctive centre, based around the High Street / shopping area of Bedford Road, B531. The first couple of years showed slow progress, but Kempston’s development continued in earnest with the construction of Kempston Barracks in 1876.
Designed in the Gothic Style, the barracks became home to the Bedfordshire Regiment, later merging with Hertfordshire and Essex to form the Royal Anglian Regiment. The site is now mostly being used for residential use and home to a masonic lodge.
