About Ampthill

Houghton House was a 17th century mansion which served the inspiration for the ‘House Beautiful’ in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. Its prominent ruins can be visited, just to the north of Ampthill, and are maintained by English Heritage.
The town of Ampthill is also closely associated with the 1960s TV show The Avengers. Screenwriter Brian Clemens lived at Park Farm until his death in 2015, and Raymond Austin, who directed a couple of episodes for the show, also lived in the town. The 1968 episode “Noon Doomsday” was also filmed in Ampthill.
