About Abercynon

Approximately 16 miles north of Cardiff, the large village of Abercynon was formed around a convergence of the rivers Cynon and Taff. As with many places in South Wales, the economy of Abercynon was for a long time centred around a colliery, which provided much employment to townspeople. The colliery was open for just under 100 years, originally opening to coal production in 1889, before closing for good in 1988.

On the outskirts of Treharris, a hamlet to the north east of Abercynon, is Llancaiach Fawr Manor, a restored Tudor manor house that is filled with replica furniture and staff in period costume, operating as a living history museum that has also been named as one of the top ten haunted locations in the UK.

In 1804, Richard Trevithick, a Cornish engineer working at the Pen-y-Darran ironworks, won a wager about drawing ten tons of iron from Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon on a train drawn by steam locomotive. Despite some setbacks, the journey was a success, making it the first recorded steam-hauled railway journey, and helping develop the nascent technology due to the engine’s use of high-pressure steam.
