About Great Dunmow
Just off of the A120, around halfway between Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford, is the growing town of Great Dunmow, based on the site of a Roman settlement, has been hosting a local market since 1253, with two annual fairs being held since the Victorian era.
There is a small town museum in Great Dunmow that is based in a 16th-century building known as the Maltings due to its small timber frames. With an extensive restoration programme is being used to set the building back to its heyday. The beautiful building can now be hired out for weddings and other events.
During the Second World War, Great Dunmow was used as an airfield for bombers from both UK and US air forces. Based on land owned by Easton Lodge, there are still remnants of runways viewable from the air, although RAF Great Dunmow has not been used since 1948, with the land being returned to its original agricultural usage.
