About Ingatestone

Located roughly halfway between Brentwood and Chelmsford, the village of Ingatestone first appeared during the Saxon times and had received a name by 1283, first being named ‘Gynges atte Stone’, and has the English language has developed so has the settlement’s name.

Just off of Hall Lane in Ingatestone Hall, a large country house that has been in the possession of the Petre family since the 1560s, when a building was first constructed for Sir William Petre with funds generated from the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Although there have been a number of developments over the years, much of the 16th-century property remains, with the most recent descendent of the Petre family still living onsite, even though most of the Hall is now used as offices or for guided tours.

There are two parks in the village. Seymour Field is at the northern limit of Ingatestone, named after ‘Skip’ Seymour, a former headteacher of a local school. Its former name was Transport Meadow, having been given to the village by the Ministry of Transport to coincide with the first A12 bypass in 1959. The other park is called Fairfield, after its historic use for village fairs and land that is privately owned by the Petre family but leased to the parish council.
