About Panfield
Located out to the North West of the town of Braintree, the scenic village of Panfield has existed since medieval times, with the 15th-century church of St Mary and St Christopher a throwback to these times. The village was once home to a small Augustinian priory that was dissolved in the 15th century. Traces of the building’s foundations have been found on local farmland. Both Great Priory Farm and Little Priory Farm are thought to be based on the site of the priory.
Another historical building at the heart of Panfield is the independently owned manor building known as Panfield Hall. Dating from the 16th century, the lush brick structure still features an orchard and traditional gardens, and unlike many grand properties from the same era, has not been sold into the ownership of the National Trust.
The Bell Inn in the centre of Panfield is a 15th-century traditional country pub that is now associated with the Greene King Brewery. Recently renovated with a more contemporary edge, the pub offers classic Sunday roast dinners and a good selection of food that make it a popular place to eat in the area.
