About Thaxted
More widely known as a popular hymn tune composed by Gustav Holst, and popularised as “I Vow To Thee My Country”, Thaxted is also a small country town in Essex with a history dating back as far as the Domesday Book, being referred to as Tachesteda. The Old English words it is derived from loosely translates as the ‘place where thatching materials are got’.
John Webb’s Mill is located just outside of the town and was built in 1804 by the local farmer and landowner, helping produce flour for both Essex and also into London. Being in a constant state of repair since the 1960s, the mill was officially reopened in 2005, only to receive damage 5 years later when one of the sails crashed to the ground. The windmill briefly appears in Pier Passolini’s 1972 adaptation of the Canterbury Tales.
The iconic town guildhall was completed in the early 15th century and is iconic in its use of both arched supports and jettied timber framing. It is thought that the Guild of Cutlers contributed to the cost of the municipal building, making it truly deserve the term ‘guild hall’.
