About Blacon
The suburb and former council estate of Blacon are situated to the northwest of Chester and is located on land once occupied by Blacon Camp, a former army base that existed for the Second World War. This southern part of Blacon is still referred to as ‘The Camp’ by some local residents, although no trace of the former facility now remains.
The northern half of Blacon was once a village named Blakon Hill, owned by the Marquess of Crewe and named in honour of the fact the land was on a hillside, overlooking the growing city of Chester nearby. It remained a small farming community until Chester City Council carried out major building works in the area in the 1950s – the line of shops on the Parade is a classic example of architecture from that time.
Blacon is one of the places that help mark the England/Wales border, which runs through Sealand Road to the west of the estate. It was once one of the largest council housing estates in Europe, but the properties are now largely under private ownership.
Chester Police Station is located in Blacon, almost directly opposite Chester Crematorium, just off of Blacon Avenue, by the bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal main line.
